The Whooping Crane

Making this series I was first inspired by watercolor paintings, and I wanted to make something with beauty in a simple form.  I also wanted something with meaning behind it, which leads me to the Whooping Crane.  The pieces themselves are made of earthenware clay and were fired in a wood-fire kiln using some of the wood from their habitats. To surmise the series is made of their natural habitat.  While their form is portrayed in similar beauty to the actual cranes… these pieces of fired clay are no more than stones.  They could never be a Whooping Crane or give you the sight of discovering one in nature. I made these platters to raise awareness of endangered species, because what joy is there in a world without discovery?
