Swingate
Swingate is a reinvented carabiner that utilizes ball joint technology for better ease of use.

Research
I ventured into the process of creating a climbing product to jump start my grasp of design and began this project while helping create a climbing gym.

THE ISSUE: Accessibility and ergonomics of climbing gear.
The current golden age of climbing as well as the influx from the boom of the 80's has created a massive population climbing gear serves.
Much of which now includes aging climbers and people with physical disabilities who need ergonomic gear.
American Alpine Club: Compilation of Injury reports

With fingers being the largest site of chronic injury, I focused on recreating the carabiner. Emphasizing a tendon friendly product with universal ease of use.
Design Process

With supporting research I began the process of brainstorming a new carabiner and using the research I filtered down to an optimal design.

The chosen design functions with a ball joint hinge for the gate of the carabiner to open in a large angle.
This successfully affords easier use while needing less finger strain to operate. Additionally the new design enables secure closure while still opening at more angles.
